KNIT AND PURL STITCH PATTERNS Combinations of these two knitting techniques, the knit and purl stitch, create an infinite number of textures and patterns.
Let’s first take a look at the two knit stitch patterns you’ve already been creating.

GARTER STITCH PATTERN
When you are knitting every row in your knitting swatch, you are creating most basic knit stitch pattern, the Garter Stitch.
CAST ON ANY NUMBER OF STITCHES KNIT ALL ROWS
STOCKINETTE STITCH PATTERN
When you are Knitting one row, then Purling the next, you are creating the Stockinette Knit Stitch Pattern.
CAST ON ANY NUMBER OF STITCHES ROW 1: KNIT ALL ROW 2: PURL ALL REPEAT ROWS 1 AND 2 UNTIL THE LENGTH DESIRED
RIB STITCH PATTERNS
First, we have Rib Stitch Patterns. You can create stretchy rib patterns with combinations of knit and purl.
1×1 RIB STITCH PATTERN
The 1×1 Rib Stitch looks a lot like the Stockinette Stitch but it’s really super stretchy and it’s identical on both sides. On the right and wrong side, it looks exactly the same.
CAST ON IN MULTIPLES OF 2 ALL ROWS: * K1, P1 * (repeat pattern within **)
2X2 RIB STITCH PATTERN
The 2×2 RIB Stitch a bit thicker and is GREAT for knitting scarves, hats, blankets, and more!
CAST ON IN MULTIPLES OF 4 ALL ROWS: * K2, P2 * (repeat pattern within **) ALL ROWS: * K2, P2 * (repeat pattern within **)
REVERSE RIDGE STITCH PATTERN
The Reverse Ridge Stitch pattern has the stretchy rib pattern horizontally rather than vertically. With a series of knits and purls, this is a reversible pattern that’s super stretchy, but unlike most rib stitches, this accordion stretch is horizontal.
CAST ON ANY NUMBER OF STITCHES
ROW 1: KNIT ALL ROW 2: PURL ALL ROW 3: KNIT ALL Repeat these 3 rows in pattern until your work is the length you desire
SEED STITCH PATTERN
This Knit Stitch Pattern is called the Seed Stitch because the raised bumps from your PURL stitches resemble seeds. It creates a really pretty and sturdy piece of knitting.
The Seed Stitch is great for knitting scarves, hats, blankets, sweaters and even knit neckties!
CAST ON AN ODD NUMBER OF STITCHES ALL ROWS: * K1, P1 *, K1 (repeat pattern within **, ending with K1)
IRISH MOSS STITCH PATTERN
The Irish Moss Stitch, also called the American Moss Stitch, is similar to the Seed Stitch, with a thicker texture. It’s nice and squishy, too.
CAST ON IN MULTIPLES OF 2
ROW 1: * K1, P1 * ROW 2: * K1, P1 * ROW 3: * P1, K1 * ROW 4: * P1, K1 * Repeat these 4 rows in pattern until your work is the length you desire
GARTER CHECKERBOARD STITCH PATTERN
This vintage Garter Checkerboard pattern is a combination of garter and stockinette stitch patterns, blocked together. It looks really intricate to knit, but it’s actually quite simple.
Cast On in Multiples of 10, plus 5
Row 1: * K5, P5 *, K5 Row 2: Purl All Row 3: * K5, P5 *, K5 Row 4: Purl All Row 5: * K5, P5 *, K5 Row 6: Purl All Row 7: * K5, P5 *, K5 Row 8: * K5, P5 *, K5 Row 9: Knit All Row 10: * K5, P5 *, K5 Row 11: Knit All Row 12: * K5, P5 *, K5 Row 13: Knit All Row 14: * K5, P5 *, K5 Repeat these 14 rows in pattern until your work is the length you desire
BASKET WEAVE STITCH PATTERN
The Basket Weave is really impressive. It looks like your pattern is actually woven like a basket, but it’s really just a combination of knit and purl stitches row after row.

CATERPILLAR STITCH PATTERN
A couple more fun ones are the Caterpillar stitch because the raised purl stitches make a little shape like a Caterpillar.
It is a perfect pattern for light summer knitting and it’s very modern. This pattern is perfect for dishcloths or anything you can dream up.
And the Chevron Stitch is really cool, how you see the zigzag pattern from those purl stitches.

Row 1: * P1, K3, P1, K3 * Row 2: * K1, P5, K1, P1 * Row 3: * K2, P1, K3, P1, K1 * Row 4: * P2, K1, P1, K1, P3 * Repeat 4 Rows until your piece is the length you desire
LINEN STITCH PATTERN
This pattern creates a really beautiful flat, thin piece of knitting, similar to linens!
CAST ON an Odd Number of Stitches
ROW 1: * K1, Yarn to Front, Slip 1 Purlwise, Yarn to Back * K1 ROW 2: * Slip 1 Purlwise, Yarn to Front, P1, Yarn to Back *, Slip 1 Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until your piece is the length you desire
